Most parents in India have no idea about the process they need to go through for their newborn’s documentation. Nowadays, you don’t have to wait for a few years to get your child’s Aadhaar Card and Passport. You just need to know about the required process to get it. This blog will act as a guide for all new parents who want to know about the complete process of a baby’s documentation. Let’s take a look into the details below.

How To Apply For a Newborn’s Documentation?

Process to Apply for Birth Certificate

India has over 2 lakh registration centers for birth certificates across all states and union territories. Let’s move forward to the steps parents need to follow to get their baby’s birth certificate.

  1. After the child is born, the medical officer in charge will give parents a registration form for a birth certificate.
  2. You will need to fill out that form and submit it to the registrar.
  3. Please note that you will also need to submit other documents like identity proofs and birth records like date, time, place of birth, hospital name, etc. for authentication purposes.
  4. After completing the verification, the registrar will issue the birth certificate.
  5. It typically takes 7 to 14 days to get the birth certificate.

Please note that it’s best to apply for your newborn’s birth certificate within 21 days of birth.

Process to Apply for an Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar cards for children below 5 years old are known as Baal Aadhaar cards. Let’s dig into the steps you need to follow to apply for your newborn’s Aadhaar card.

  1. Locate a nearby Aadhaar Enrollment Center and visit the office.
  2. Fill out the Aadhaar Enrollment Form, and note that parents need to mention their Aadhaar number while filling out the form. You can provide either the details of the father or mother.
  3. The authorities will take a picture of your child.
  4. Fill up other demographic information and address in accordance with your Aadhaar.
  5. Submit a copy of the hospital discharge certificate or birth certificate, whatever is available to you at the time.
  6. At last, you will get the enrollment slip. You can use that enrollment number to track the Aadhaar card status.

Some necessary points you must know:

  1. Fingerprints and iris scans are not taken for the Baal Aadhaar card.
  2. Aadhaar cards for children are blue in color.

Process to Apply for Passport

Please note that you will not be able to apply for your newborn’s passport without a birth certificate. Here are the steps required to apply for your newborn’s passport.

Online Procedure

  1. Visit the website https://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink# and register a new account in your child’s name.
  2. Log in to the account using the credentials.
  3. You can then choose either Option 1 or Option 2 at your convenience. Option 1 allows you to fill out the form online, whereas Option 2 allows you to download the form and then fill it out.
  4. Pay the application fee.

Offline Procedure

  1. Visit your nearest Passport Office.
  2. Fill out the application form and submit the required documents.
  3. Pay the fees.

Please note that you need to attach the below documents at the time of submission:

  • Passports of both parents
  • Birth certificate
  • The marriage certificate of the parents, along with a photocopy
  • Child’s photograph
  • Both parents need to sign Annexure D with the application. This states that the parents have permitted the issuance of the child’s passport.
  • Affix the thumb impression of the child in the appropriate column of the form (right for girls and left for boys).
  • It typically takes 30 days to issue the passport.

Some essential points to be noted:

In cases where both parents don’t have passports, at least having a passport for one parent will exempt the child from the Police Verification Process.
